MY COMMENTARY : For those who still don't understand the implications of the NYPD warrantless surveillance of the Muslim community, here is the latest evidence of what I have been saying for months. The NYPD has been illegally spying not just on Muslims but on non-Muslims as well, in defiance of the law (which prevents domestic spying upon US citizens) and previous legal agreements (like Handschu) http://thevillager.com/villger_293/asneakymoveon.html. This latest episode focused upon us Muslims is just part of a larger fight that has to do with the constitutionality of certain law enforcement tactics. The NYPD has an attempted media spin justification of its acttions, but mark my words . There will be HUGE court battles over this! The NYPD , with its lack of transparency and accountability, is an out of control city agency that is acting like an out of control federal one - using counter-terrorism as an excuse for the violation of the civil liberties of Americans.

NON-MUSLIM AMERICAN CITIZENS who have been backing the NYPD in its programs because they (the citizens) have bought into the propaganda of Muslims as "the other" and the need for "us" to watch "them" should wake up. As El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) said speaking to African Americans, "You've been tricked. You've been had. You've been bamboozled, led astray, run amok !" Well this no longer applies just to African Americans, but to too many Americans of various ethnicities. While you have been manipulated into being advocates for watching "them", the same watchers have been watching "you"!

MUSLIM AMERICAN CITIZENS (actually or potentially) should stop seeing themselves as "the other" in American society, and realize that our plight is that of other Americans of different religions,or none, when it comes to civil liberties. We are just a specialized sub-category of oppressed and repressed minorities, driven by the political agendas of a Pharoahnic order that sees us as a special threat, just as Pharoah saw the Children of Israil as one.

As it is written in the Torah (In the "Old Testament" of the Bible" :

"And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. " (Exodus 1: 7-10)

Further, Muslim immigrants must stop letting others paint us as "the other". Christian and unbelieving European immigrants came to this country centuries ago, stole the land from its original inhabitants, named themselves "the Americans" and treated the Original Americans as "strangers in a strange land" and "the other". Now the descendants of those immigrants are treating other newer immigrants as "the other" and the enemy. Don't let them do that to you as well. Don't let them get away with it !!! And don't be fooled. You can change your name, learn the rhetoric and pretend, and the ruling powers will allow you to do so and use you. But they still see you as an "other" so don't believe your own hype!

Another thing, while the European immigrants of the past (" the pilgrims" and "founding fathers") were dis-enfranchising and demonizing the Original Americans as "heathens" and "savages", they stole my African ancestors from our native land, and brought them to this stolen land by force, as slaves. Their laws originally did not include us within the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We were considered property and had to fight (with help from well-meaning folk) to achieve the status of an "other", and then an equal, under the law. We are still fighting, and that fight has shaped the landscape for civil and human rights struggle for all Americans. But our status as non-immigrants is not only a challenge to America in this day (witness the on-going effort to mis-characterize President Obama as a non-citizen, Muslim "other") but an advantage.

MUSLIM AMERICANS OF IMMIGRANT ORIGIN - WAKE UP and stop attempting to ignore the presence of the secret weapon in your midst - Muslim Americans of African descent, as a people. And when I say "secret weapon" I don't mean as terrorists. Have you noted that African Americans are the only "native" Muslim ethnicity on the NYPD "ancestries of interest"list?  SEE  http ://wid.ap.org/documents/nypd-demo.pdf
I mean as a strategic partner in the struggle for freedom, justice, and equality, not as a terrorist.

We Muslim Americans of African descent are not immigrants. Don't speak to us or treat us as if we are, and don't think that you know better than us how to fight a fight that we've been fighting for centuries. Don't try to speak for us like you're our daddy, and don't try to be our spokespersons or go between unless we've agreed upon that as a strategy through mutual consultation (shura) . We won't allow it. Thinking paternalistically about us is an act of disempowerment of the ummah in this land. We Muslims of various ethnicities and backgrounds are all one ummah, and Muslim Americans of African descent are that ummah's unique strategic asset if you understand. If we are to be victorious in our struggle, we must be one unified ummah, just as the muhaajiruun and ansars of the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were one ummah in spite of their different and distinctive origins.

MUSLIM AMERICANS OF AFRICAN DESCENT - WAKE UP and be true to our destiny (after you learn what it is, but that's another blog).

ALL MUSLIM AMERICANS:

Don't misunderstand. Here's a word from Allah:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ

" O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things").  (Qur'an 49:13)

That being said, I further quote Dr. Agha Saeed of Berkeley, Calif., the Pakistan-born founding chairman of the American Muslim Task Force, a group attempting to build coalitions across ethnic groups.

"The issues are more complex than simply immigrant versus indigenous Muslims. People from the Middle East alone come from 22 different countries. People from South Asia come from different countries. So we are not simply talking about four or five or even 20 groups of people. We are trying to reconcile many different experiences of history and many different conceptions of destiny, when we try to talk about where we came from, who we are and where we want to go. And that takes time."

MUSLIM APOLOGISTS FOR THESE NYPD POLICIES - WAKE UP! Don't sell yourself and the Ummah short by being a collaborationist. Muslim religious and community leaders who oppose these unjust policies are not naive nor mis-guided. If you think we are, then perhaps you are. This is not about you or even us. This is about freedom.

AMERICANS OF ALL ETHNICITIES AND RELIGIONS - WAKE UP! As my uncle Ghazi Khan-Khan once said "We all came to America in different ships, but now we're in the same boat!" Now that boat does have different decks and accomodations, but that's another blog.
